Shipping Industry: Global Changes Due to COVID-19
Who would have imagined how COVID-19 would drastically change the way we live and do business? The whole industry is adapting to this new reality, coming up with new methods of working to ensure seamless workflow and most importantly – a superior customer experience for you. Nothing is more important than the safety and health of our families, colleagues, and business partners during this period and beyond.
Business As Usual
For us at Willship, we’re open as per normal since international transport, customs brokerage, and local transport are considered as ‘essential business’. No one really knows how long the pandemic will be and how severe the global economy is affected. But what we do know is – we will continue to look after our customer’s needs, provide all the support and guidance as best as we can.
Our offices remain to be open until the government advises us otherwise. So if you need a warehousing option due to business closures and to cope with overflow, we have ample space for your goods and a very large hard stand for the storage items. Feel free to contact us if you need anything.
The Rules Have Changed
Previously: according to Maritime Safety Queensland’s ruling, all vessels calling Queensland ports must go through a 14-day Quarantine process.
Now: no longer applicable to all vessels. Only for vessels that departed from China and South Korea before arrival in Queensland. The 14-day quarantine period is between the departure from the last international port and arrival at Brisbane.
China: shipping tonnage from China is close to normal and cargo seems to be moving.
Europe: several European countries have closed their ports and suspended shipping services. We will respond to specific customers who are getting affected by this issue.
How About Airfreight?
Airfreight into Australia is severely constrained, with practically zero passenger loads and only cargo aircraft operations. Cargo capacity has been reduced by 80-90% due to passenger flight cancellations during this period.
There is currently no cargo-only aircraft call to Brisbane, so cargo is mainly coming through Sydney and Melbourne. Transit time and prices have also bee heavily affected during this period.
