You asked, we listened!

Introducing Australia’s first ‘turn key’ return, un-crated, containerized motorcycle shipping package between Australia and New Zealand.

You can use the bike for up to 12 months over in NZ, you don’t need to have a set return date, and you can legally ride the bike in NZ on your Australian registration! We handle all the red tape and jump through all the hoops so you don’t have to.

Total Return cost = AUD 3995.00 all inclusive!

Here’s what we can offer, and what you need to know:

Leg 1 – Brisbane to Auckland.

What we do -

  • Receive, pack and ship the bike inside a shared container across to Auckland. Sailings are weekly and you will need allow roughly 2 -3 weeks from drop off to pick up in NZ.
  • We clear your bike through NZ customs and quarantine, arrange all necessary customs temporary import formalities and checks and move your bike through to a compliance depot in Penrose, Auckland where we will arrange for a temporary warrant of fitness and safety check to be completed.

What you do -

  • Deliver the bike to our packing depot in Brisbane in clean condition with minimal fuel in the tank.
  • Pay a bond of 15% of the bikes value + the freight, which is calculated in NZD at the NZ Customs Nominated Exchange rate of the day, this is payable to our NZ office. This is a NZ Government requirement and this will be held while you are touring NZ and will be refunded in full once the bike leaves the country. If funds are being sent to or from an Australian bank account then an intl transaction fee of NZD 50.00 will apply to cover the bank fee’s. The actual amount refunded may differ slightly depending on the intl exchange rate at the time of refund.
  • When the bike is ready to go, you will come to our compliance depot in Auckland where the bike will be located, receive your temporary warrant of fitness and other documents, you will need to walk 700m down the road to the New Zealand Transport Agency, fill out a ‘Notice of temporary vehicle import by overseas’ visitor form and pay the NZD $16 / 6 month or NZD $25 / 12 month temporary registration fee.
  • Then you’re all set! You can walk back the bike and from that point onwards you can legally ride on NZ roads for up to 12 months from the date of first import.

Important Information

  • You must ensure your bike is fully registered in Australia for the duration of your trip to New Zealand, and you must leave your Australian number plates affixed to the bike.
  • You must ensure you carry your valid Australian Drivers Licence on you whenever you ride the bike in NZ.
  • NZ does not require mandatory on road insurance like we do in Australia, if you would like to take out on road insurance for your time in NZ just let us know and we can put you in touch with some NZ based insurers who can help.
  • Pricing above is based on the bike passing it’s initial quarantine inspection and not requiring any form of cleaning or treatment, If any cleaning or treatment is required, then additional charges will apply depending on what’s required.
  • Pricing above based on the bike not requiring any work in order for it to pass a warrant of fitness (WOF) / safety check. If any work is required to get it up to standard, then these additional costs will be your responsibility.
  • Transit Insurance is NOT included in the above pricing but is highly recommended, more information on transit insurance at the bottom of the quote.

Leg 2 - Auckland back to Brisbane

What we do -

  • When you’re done touring the beautiful country of New Zealand, you will need to give us a week or two notice prior to delivering the bike back into our Auckland depot.
  • On the day of drop off it’s simply a case of handing the bike back over to us in clean condition with minimal fuel, and that’s your job done!
  • Once the bike arrives back into Australia our team will keep you updated on it’s clearance process and when it’s ready to go you can simply head into the depot and ride it away

What you do -

  • We will receive, pack, and ship the bike back through to Brisbane inside a shared container. Sailings are weekly and this process should take 2-3 weeks from the day of drop off in Auckland until you can collect it in Brisbane and simply ride away since your Australian rego will still be current.
  • We will complete the export clearance of the bike in NZ, and organize for your 15% GST bond to be refunded to your nominated bank account.
  • We will arrange the Australia Vehicle import permit for you and we will complete the import clearance on the bike. No duty or GST is payable since it’s a returning bike, although Australian customs charge a ‘Customs User Fee’ of AUD 214.50 which will need to be paid on arrival.

Important Information

  • Pricing above is based on the bike passing it’s initial quarantine inspection and not requiring any form of cleaning or treatment, If any cleaning or treatment is required, then additional charges will apply depending on what’s required.
  • Transit Insurance is NOT included in the above pricing but is highly recommended, more information on transit insurance below.

Transit Insurance

While we take every care to load and secure the bikes as safely as possible, sometimes accidents do happen. The Tasman is home to some of the roughest waters in the world so the journey across to NZ can often be a little turbulent. Transit insurance will cover the bike for any potential damage / loss / theft etc that could happen to the bike while in transit. The cost each way for a policy is 1% of the value of the bike, minimum policy is AUD 300.00. More information here – http://www.willship.com.au/useful-information/transit-insurance/

Documents you’ll need

  • A Valid Passport (of course!)
  • An original registration certificate – This is important as the New Zealand Transport Agency require the original copy in order to grant you your temporary registration. If you don’t have an original you can contact the transport department and they can mail one out to you.
  • A copy of the Purchase Invoice / Contract of Sale / Bill of sale for the bike. We use this document in order to work out the GST bond payable to the NZ Government.

You will also need to complete a ‘Client Code Application Form’ which we will send you at the time of booking (It’s very easy)

Total costs and final checklist

We here at Willship are very against unquoted or ‘hidden’ charges, we feel It’s always important to be clear on ALL potential costs so we have outlined everything you need to consider below.

  • Freight Costs – AUD 3995.00 Return.
  • GST Bond payable to the NZ Government – 15% of the landed value (refunded in full on export)
  • Transit Insurance (Optional, but highly recommended) – The cost each way for a policy is 1% of the value of the bike, minimum policy is AUD 300.00.
  • Temporary Registration costs. NZD 16.00 for 6 months, NZD 25.00 for 12 months.
  • On road Insurance while you’re riding in New Zealand – This is not mandatory but this is another cost you’ll need to obtain from a NZ based insurer if it’s something you feel you need.
  • Customs User fee – AUD 214.50 payable to Australian customs when the bike arrives back into Australia.

That’s it!

The only way any further costs could be incurred is if the bike fail’s it’s quarantine inspection and requires cleaning either over in NZ or when it arrives back in Australia, or if it requires any work to get it up to a warrant of fitness standard over in NZ.

Conditions

  • Pricing is based on a standard sized, two wheeled motorcycle, dimensions of the bike must not exceed 2.30m in length, and 1.2m in width. If your bike is larger than this we can still help, however pricing will increase.
  • If the bike has panniers / saddlebags these will need to empty. If you do want to leave personal goods inside the storage compartments of the bike we will need to lodge a secondary personal effects entry at both ends and declare these, and this will add around AUD 1000.00 in costs to the return journey, so best to leave them empty.
