International shipping of vehicles is done in one of two ways, the cheapest and most popular is Roll on, Roll off. The second option is to load and lash inside a 20ft or 40ft shipping container for transit across to your final destination.
Here’s a guide to the differences:
Ro/Ro – Roll on / Roll off.
Roll on, Roll off vessels are vessels specifically built for the transport of cars, caravans, motorhomes and the like. Vehicles are driven or towed onto the vessel by port or vessel staff and the vehicle is secured under the deck of the vessel.
There are a lot of ‘old wives tales’ and misconceptions about this method of shipping – The vehicle will not be exposed to the elements in any way, the risk of damage is extremely low and the inside of modern roll on, roll off vessels look like well-maintained underground carparks. We had access to one of these vessels a little while back and we have written an article further outlining this method of shipping and have included a number of photos which will show you exactly what these vessels look like. The one downside of this method of shipping is that no personal effects are permitted to be shipped along with the vehicle. If it is a touring/camping vehicle then vehicle specific touring items can be left in the vehicle. The shipping line however will not be responsible for any missing or damaged items nor will insurance cover these so it’s best to remove anything of value.
Ro/Ro is the most common and cost effective shipping method for vehicles, trailers, trucks and earth moving machinery.
Container shipping is most commonly used for vehicles that are not running or for people who want to ship personal, commercial, or high value items along with the car.
We have packing depots in every port in Australia, NZ, the UK, Canada and the USA and if choosing to ship via this method we would professionally load and lash your vehicle into the shipping container at the origin port. Vehicles shipped in this method must have minimal fuel to meet dangerous goods requirements, so your only requirement prior to drop off would be to ensure the vehicle has around 5L or less of fuel and we handle all remaining formalities.
We have loaded thousands of vehicles over the years and have never had any damage or incidents – This method of shipping is extremely safe. Once it is sealed at our depot, it will not be opened again until it arrives at its destination. So, if you had high value items you wanted to ship along with the car then this is a very safe way to ensure they arrive along with the vehicle at the other end.
Container shipping is the most secure and controlled way of shipping your vehicle. In this format you can have your vehicle fully loaded with goods and we can also fit approx. 3 m3 of other goods within the container around the vehicle.
